Too many power outages so far this season. We decided to get a backup generator. I figure 13k 50 amp portable type. I'm curious to know of your experiences with them. Thanks.

No experience with the portables, but we purchased and installed a Kohler 22KW about two years ago and I love it. We live in the sticks and power outages are fairly common. When it goes, about 20 seconds later, the house is up and running as if nothing ever happened. I was torn between the Generac and the Kohler, but I am pleased with the operation of the Kohler.

IMO you can run most things with 13K. Any electric heat (like a clothes dryer or electric central heat) might be too much though. Good luck!

we have a portable generator & have it wired for the well pump, water heater, gas stove/oven, a few outlets for the coffee pot & microwave & in the bedrooms for electric blankets. that seems to be enough to get by. we lost power a few years ago for 10 days & i was so grateful to have it.

forgot to add the fridge in that list - no sense having a working oven with no fresh food.

Mine is hooked to my furnace, fridge, freezer (not that I run them continuously).

I’ve only needed it once, but for the two days needed, I loved that I did it.

I also run cords to a few lamps and tv.
