Noticing the dynamic coming and going of the 'mods online' box, how about an icon or something for thread titles for 'Breaking News' that after an hour or so, and stories not 'breaking' any more it vanishes. As it is there are 'breaking news' posts years old. 
Could be a little flashing bubble with the label 'breaking news' like for Sticky posts or the "hot" thread designations to draw readers but then vanishes after some amount of time.
