Nebraska Gov Pete Ricketts called off plans to pass his 12-week abortion ban through special session, citing lack of support in unicameral legislature

he won't be governor in a few months, so you can't criticize much, but this is definitely a cop-out from fighting for conservative principles!

How is it a "cop out" not to engage a battle that his political instincts indicate he is destined to lose?

Taking an incremental step or two with the idea of taking this issue on in the not so distant future might make a lot more sense.

Depends on the State and the current legislative setup.

Absolutism is often a quick way to let the other side get what it wants through an inability to pass what you want to pass.

He is fighting for it.

But he's being smart about it, looking for incremental better policies that even hard core libs might vote for as "common sense". Just move the libs closer to the slippery slope.
