Daytona 500 just ran. Denny Hamlin appeared to have it the last lap. Cole Custer comes down, and then a wreck.

William Byron comes through and wins it. And guess who ends up third? None other than Jimmy Johnson.

NASCAR just ain't what it used to be back in the day.

I don't watch it any more. I couldn't even tell you who the teams and drivers are these days.

I don't necessarily like parity, but my understanding is that some teams and drivers just ran away with everything during yesteryear. The Daytona announcers were talking about a race some time in the 1970s. They said this driver lapped the entire field. I can't imagine being a fan at that yawner.

For what ever reason Jimmy Johnson will always show up in the top finishers or winners circle. Once he gets in front he will stay there like David Peirson back in the past. So just go outside and throw the football around.:)

For todays drivers I keep up with Blaney.

But he has not finished high since he went part-time. He had his heyday and mostly finishes well outside the top 15 now. That's why 3rd was a surprise. OTOH, Daytona and Talladega often have those types of results.

Ok, How come with 15 laps to go bubba wallace was in first, seamed to have firm control of the pole and then all of the sudden drops out of sight out of mind. Did he just choke or did his car start having problems
it just seamed super strange

I was reading that Danica Patrick won the Daytona 500 pole position.

Which apparently was a first, being the first woman to do it, with a speed of 196.43 mph, the fastest Daytona 500 pole speed in the last 30 years.

I still watch at it. Can't say I'm into it like back when Gordon was running.

I worked for DuPont at the time and we made the paint for his car.

It was good to see the 24 car win as the paint plant is still made in my AO under another name (DuPont sold the business to Axalta).

Wallace was on the third lane, which did not have enough cars. They could not get momentum and Wallace fell back. He then was caught up in a wreck and, I think, finished three laps down.

As long as bubba Wallace loses I'm a fan

I thought SVG with the freshest tires would move to the front. But it never happened.

Anyone attending a NASCAR race this year should check out this video to get a real feel for the experience:

It covers everything from fan traditions and race-day atmosphere to the strong sense of community that makes NASCAR special. Whether it’s your first race or you’re a longtime fan, this gives a great look at what to expect!

C Bell wins three in a row.

I caught the D Hamlin post-race interview. He was tentative about what he should have done on the last lap. He said something about possibly squeezing Bell, but the said "I don't know." Hamlin can be a dirty driver, but I'm guessing he did not want to risk taking out a teammate.

Las Vegas up next. Let's see if Busch gets a little hometown motivation to end his long winless streak.

Would have been cool to see brother Kurt in that race. Looks like he was busy in the Australian race, where he went 1 win and 1 loss. His drunk driving plea in North Carolina last year didn't help him much either.

I hope he comes back for a race or two. Only in his mid-forties, I think. Fans warmed up to him as he got older.

Kurt is still a hothead.

Big fan here. I also like Indy car, which can be very different. I've been to the Indianapolis 500 and 4-5 stock car tracks in NASCAR. I went to one smaller venue that was very cool.

I'd like to see him at N Wilkesboro.
