I never pay attention but was in two stores yesterday and cigarettes were below the counter in own and locked up in another.

Just heard that NY pays the highest tax per pack - $4+ and a pack is expected to go to $10.

Smoking is really dumb for a lot of reasons but I would think the cost would discourage a lot of people. Maybe not. Addiction is the deciding factor for most.

Actually it was a raise in the tax that caused my parents to quit smoking. It was one of the happiest days of my life. Sadly it was too late, my mother still died of lung cancer, 13 years after she'd quit.

Bloomberg is not calling for them to be out of reach, he's demanding they be out of sight. They are typically behind the counter at most stores, because they are easy to steal. Most stores put them at the front, clearly displayed, for the same reason you have gum, key chains, and lip gloss at the front. Impulse buys.

Hiding cigarettes like we do porn is totally ridiculous, over the top , an expensive cost to many businesses and will have no effect on the amount of people who smoke.
