In 1945 Bedouins digging at a cave discovered an earthen jar. When they opened it, they thought sparks of gold flew up into the heavens. They were certain the vessel contained gold or a djinn, a genie to grant their wishes
Upon closer inspection, all they found were disappointing sheets of paper - in a jar which had been buried near a 4th Century monastery. Thinking their only use was to kindle fire, they brought the jar home and burned several layers of the papers
Once word of the discovery spread, the remaining papers were rescued and eventually translated into what is now known as the Nag Hammadi Library
I grew up Roman Catholic and felt a deep affinity for Jesus, but grew increasingly dissatisfied and disillusioned with the Church itself, especially the hierarchy and intermediaries.
More and more I find myself returning to these verses
