Why have so many public schools stopped teaching phonics?

When I was six, every single child in my class at Montessori knew how to read.

Many could read at four.

Some even younger.

Susie Coughlin was concerned when her daughter struggled with reading skills at her public school.

The mom of two was disappointed her district didn't teach phonics as part of its literacy program.

She switched her child to a Catholic school where the girl thrived after being taught phonics.

There are two Montessori schools in my AO, I'm paying to send my great grandson (just turned 5) to one of them next year.

One is Catholic and the other is not affiliated religion-wise; I'm leaning toward the latter one.

To get an idea of the Grift by Teachers Unions consider this -- Florida is near the Bottom in spending per Student and Teacher Pay. New Yawk spends almost THREE times as much per student as we do.

But Florida has the best education, the best schools, primary through College, of any State. Period. In fact, it's not even close.

Because, and this is really simple..... We don't take ANY shit from the totally corrupt Teachers Unions. At all. You strike, you fired. Don't like it? We don't care. We can get a Trained Monkey to take your place because -- That's all you are anyway. I'm gonna tell you like it is, people.... Teachers are dumb. I know, I've done business with hundreds of them. Had to explain things to them. They're just not very bright. There are always exceptions but, overall.... Not bright people at all. Some are intelligent and motivated before they go into the profession. But the ones with triple-digit-IQs leave. Believe it.

TALLAHASSEE, FL (May 7, 2024) – U.S. News & World Report has once again named Florida the number one state in the country for higher education. Since the inception of the rankings in 2017, Florida has swept the rankings.May 7, 2024

That link reports higher education. Nothing about lower grade education.

Every parent in our neighborhood taught our kids how to read at night with the homework.

Does it make any difference, especially when College graduates can neither read, spell or write in cursor?

Oh, c'mon man. You can disagree all you want. Read the 1st sentence of the article.

The parents should be teaching the kids how to read every night. If reading is hard to learn it may be dyslexia, even a mild form.

My mother gave us spelling lessons and writing lessons on school breaks.

That's not real great.

If you're doing well in school, you don't need lessons during breaks. Kids need a chance to be kids, run around, go outside, play. My mom was a teacher and unless I asked for help, the only thing regarding school she made sure of at home was that I did my homework. After it was done, she'd say "Ok, now go outside and play." If I didn't leave, she'd push me out.

On the bus ride home we'd all figure out who had the most homework and the one with the least would be team captain and we'd figure out our football teams for that afternoon. I became the most recruited wide receiver in the 7th grade. But I couldn't throw for anything. I could throw far, but I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn doing it.

But pushing kids, even during breaks when they're supposed to be getting a brain break from school and just be carefree, is not the answer. It doesn't make kids smarter, it makes them burned out.

That's where my daughter went and then to BASIS school. I went to public school when they were somewhat decent but just couldn't send my daughter to them now.

It was good parenting. Wasn’t all day or even every day. An hour or two here and there.. we went to catholic schools and the education was good. But kids need to be pushed, this is why none of them can read or even do basic math. These idiots working at stores cant even count the correct change..

Kids don't need to be pushed, they need to be encouraged.

why did you fail to teach your own child how to read??

I started reading before I went to school,, all school did was refine my reading,,

those who depend on government for basics deserve what they get,,
