Politics was never discussed in our household. My mother died when I was a young child and thus my father worked a lot to keep us in a home. Thus, I was a latch-key kid. The only really negative thing I can say about my father was later in life, after he had passed. After I joined the military, I was talking on the phone with my brother who asked me if I was dating any women where I was stationed. I responded that I had met a very pretty black girl who I was seeing. His response was outrage, claiming that our father would "roll-over in his grave," that I was seeing a "n****r." The topic of blacks and whites never came up in the family or neighborhood, so I had no clue as to their stance on it.
My response was, I'll see who I want, and to this day, neither I nor my family communicate with each other. If you can't accept people on an individual basis, based upon their character, you're not worth knowing.

You can find many other things besides politics to talk about with him.

The normal progression of an American who is open minded and intelligent is from Liberal to Conservative. Young people are often idealistic, and believe that people succeed and fail based on factors outside themselves (Oppressor vs Oppressed), then, when they start to work to support themselves they realize that for most people, their success or failure is largely the result of their own talents and efforts, which is the Conservative view. I know some people who have gone in the other direction, but they are rare and the change is usually due to some pathology.

I was fortunate enough to have very few disagreements with my dad, although there were a few.

We agreed on most things and he knew that it upset me when we did disagree.

I will never forget what he always told me.

He would say "son if you agreed with everything I said, I would wonder if you were listening".

He was a very wise man and always taught me to stand up for my beliefs.
