why not start smaller, like the moon? set up a base, much closer and use that as a stepping stone?
from a monetary and logical scope this is the better choice

Mars shall be conquered, Musk doesn't want to replicate a boring moon visit, that's yesterdays news and he wants something new. One day perhaps our species will be travelling to distant galaxies, even the journey of 1000 miles starts with one step. Musk wants to take that second step I suppose.

"We" have been on both for decades if you look at the various whistleblower testimonies , and note hacker Gary McKinnon's detail results from project Solar Warden .
Of course most people dismiss this as pure rubbish but as they have never investigated something which began in the 1950s in terms of treaty agreements , that is only to be expected .

To the ordinary Sheeplet the whole subject is actually irrelevant because to them it is "moonshine !" , but if true it is of the most significant importance because technologically it is all about propulsion systems and the likelihood that ZPE has been part of the Secret Space Programme for decades .

Of course you can dismiss this whole area as utter BS but so is around 95% of all material on this chat site .
However , this is far more intriguing , imho .
