They weren't named for the time of the day but the call they make which is similar to a person in mourning. There isn't much to the pigeon like birds but strangely enough there is a hunting season on them in the fall at least in Va.. You can kill a maximum of 25 in a day which might make a decent meal if you could take the bird shot out of the things.

I've popped many a dove breast after a hunt. I always used #6 shot on them, instead of # 71/2 shot as most hunters use.

I have them lined up every morning for when I toss out seed. I like hearing them.

Baiting and shooting the things off wires seems to be the accepted hunting practice.

Limit out for three days with 75 of these dead creatures? It can't be about the meat.
It takes a lot as there isn't a ton of meat there. We hunted them when I was young. Lot of farmers would let you hunt their land after they cut their corn if you knew them. Haven't hunted in eons though. Problem with dove is that if you wing them, you have to wring their necks which often results in their head ending up in one hand and their body in the other. It is a carnal thing. Once I got old enough to use odd jobs as an excuse to not be forced to go, I quit hunting.

A lovely sound to hear, sitting in the garden in America recently.

We don’t have them in Europe. We have wood pigeons.
