At its core, the Derangement Syndrome (whoever it's directed at) is driven by tribalism. In an increasingly detached world, where community is shrinking and for many has disappeared altogether, there is a growing desire to belong and for many, to belong means to see the group's dynamic and take it to a further extreme so as to garner attention and approval from the group. Therefore, it is not enough for sufferers of TDS to quietly dislike Orange Man while respecting the thoughts and opinions of other people, they must demonstrate to the group their fealty and say or do what they think demonstrates that they hate Orange Man more than the next member.

This is, of course, quite childish, but that doesn't stop adults from doing it.

Observe the vitriol and hate this post will generate.

Social Identity Theory

It's a solid theory. Decades ago, community was a group of people with whom you interacted face to face and social norms governed those interactions. You would not casually insult someone because you risked a fist to the face, and those around would not only refuse to step in and defend you, they would likely shake the other guy's hand for defending his honor. Today on the internet, everyone is "safe" behind anonymity and the only norms governing their interactions with other people are the restrictions the mechanisms facilitating those interactions have in place. No one is afraid they will be punched out, the worst that can happen is they get kicked off a certain thread or maybe banned from the place for a time, so they are free to say the worst, most childish, stupidest things you can imagine to and about other people, none of whom they have ever met.

The worst thing to imagine is that this somehow makes the people spouting the hate feel what, more mature, more adult, like better quality people?
