Something I've taken to doing out of fear of being dumbed-down is hitting Mute during commercials. If not gonna turn the channel because I'm doing something else during commercial, I'll hit Mute rather than allow myself to be bombarded with ridiculousness. I've begun noticing commercials, and regular programming is much less offensive without sound.
