As someone who served in the IL ARNG back in the 1980s, I couldn't imagine a worse idea than sending out the guard to do law enforcement.

They aren't trained for it. (except maybe the MP Units, more on them in a second).

Your Average Guard unit gets maybe one day a year of Civil Disturbance Training. I recall that my unit lacked sufficient batons and face shields, so they had to train one platoon at a time.

The one thing I do remember, though, was a very thoughtful Officer who told us, "If we are out on CD duty, you have to remember that those are not the enemy out there. Those are your fellow citizens, they are damned angry about something, and they have every right to be."

Now, the few MP Units we have MIGHT Be good for the roll. I think we had two companies of MPs when I was in, but my memory is foggy after 40 years. The problem there is that most of the guys in those units are cops in the civilian world, so you are really robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Mayor Johnson is misreading his own electorate.

Even though Chi-Town has the highest crime rate in the history of mankind, most Chicagoans want to be able to walk out at night. Even those who earn a good living because of crime, like my cousin who is a nurse at Northwestern U Hospital tending to gun shot victims.

The thing is that Johnson can avoid this whole federal intervention easily. If HE decided to crack down on crime and start splitting the wigs of Chicago's criminals, the crime rate would fall quickly and no federal intervention would be needed.

Anyone who enters the military without the knowledge that they have just agreed to unquestionably obey orders doesn't belong there.
The military is not about feelings it's about obedience. Yes that can easily turn into authoritarianism and oppression but unfortunately such a blunt instrument is often necessary to meet the challenges to a free society that often occur simply because people do have that freedom.

The problem is that this is what CNN and MSNBC want. In fact, they desperately need it.

They need one or two videos to illustrate police brutality, another George Floyd. The Floyd incident lead to mass protests and a rush of Dem support they didnt have prior. Trump worked really hard to gain the minority and youth vote.

No one likes crime obviously, but it's more a social issue than anything else. Take away the most violent for sure, but it's a wide net and something will go wrong.

The Dems see the civil liberties angle as one which Trump is refusing to grab from them. He will talk about it but won't walk because an influencer or two tells him "dont do that Trump"! Meanwhile, 90% of voters under 30 would support it. I wonder if these influencers actually want Trump to succeed or not.

Biden talked about decreasing the Class of weed. Talked. He never fulfilled his promise. If I am Trump I balance the police surge in D.C with just such a shift and tell everyone "Biden talked about it but my administration acts on it". He can tell people he doesn't smoke it, wouldn't encourage people to do so, but I wouldn't encourage people to drink alcohol either, something I dont do, but people want to live a little".

It's possible that Trump may have the wrong people in his ear and he doesn't appreciate that this is giving life to the Dems.

If your cousin is that concerned with gunshot victims, maybe she should talk to the National Rampage Association. Chicago had sensible gun laws until they went to court and got them struck down.
