I am not happy about what happened to Rob Reiner. He did not deserve what happened to him; nobody deserved that in my opinion even if he thought differently than I do. I never identified with his meathead role on All in the Family that debuted in 1971. I liked the Archie character played by Carol O'Conner. I laughed when Archie flushed his toilet; I have flushed a few toilets in my day. I have also worked blue collar jobs and lived a blue-collar life like Archie. O'Conner did a great job with that role; I never felt judged or slighted by his work. Sometimes he made me laugh at myself—laughing is good.
The headline on my computer's welcome page is interesting. The fact that Rob Reiner was a classic liberal with a disturbed son on a panoply of drugs is not the lead story. The real story, according to the lead, is that Donald Trump spoke ill of the dead. Donald Trump brought up Trump Derangement Syndrome. Donald Trump is Donald Trump; he is what he is. People who voted for him know that. They know the packaging could be better, but the core product is what they want. I apologize for the insensitivity, but I still support the man. The unfortunate deaths of Reiner and his wife fit into the patchwork of homicidal outcomes all too common in today’s postmodern society.
When some are displeased with a situation, they take to the streets in violent protests and today sympathetic legacy media controls the narrative for them. This is front and center; it is not conspiracy theory. But when others with a different point of view protest, it is called an insurrection. This is odd and leads some to wonder if the government and its minion's equal democracy or if they are separate entities.
The notion that average Americans like the character, Archie Bunker, are too uneducated and too uncultured to understand the importance of government is paraded everywhere in today’s media. It is insulting and off putting and probably accounts for Trump’s success more than anything else. It is also hypocritical when Trump wants to use federal laws to maintain peace and order in violent cities.
It may also be dangerous. Do we see the fingerprints of assassins like Thomas Mathew Crooks and Ryan Wesley Routh on the narratives being pushed by some in today’s divisive political climate? What about the Tyler Robinson sniper killing of Charlie Kirk, the rising and effective influencer problematic to those who did not follow his arguments?
I am not religious like some. I am probably agnostic like Archie and keep my beliefs to myself. When Norman Leer created that television show, he knew things could change later, and he said so; you must let the pendulum swing. The pendulum is swinging, and Donald Trump is in the White house.
I hope the Reiners will rest in peace.
