Hydrogen is apparently created when these old subs charged their battery. Even a single bolt of static electricity could set it off. They found the battery's mounting bolts were sheared off, so it seems the most likely scenario. The sailors died 20 minutes before implosion occurred. They would have died instantly from the initial explosion.
I remember. It was so sad.
