The very nature of government is to control as much as they can, including free speech.

The US is the only country in the world that has protections on free speech and will probably be the last.

It is then a natural thing for the US government to try and do away with such free speech.

In fact, early on in the country the Founding Fathers created the Alien and Sedition laws that prohibited free speech in the 1700's. It sent Thomas Jefferson into a rage, as he ran for President to overturn it.

Jefferson was successful in overturning most of it, the rest of which remained FDR used to unconstitutionally lock up Japanese Americans during WW2, which is perhaps the biggest racial crime in US history.

However, before overturning the Alien and Sedition Act, Jefferson took the opportunity to help silence his critics as well.

Shrug, power corrupts but politics is all about obtaining such power.
