There are more bookstores in Portland than you can shake a stick at. Portland is a big bicycle city, too. There was an article in the local paper (Anchorage Daily News) a while back about la Rafle du Vel d’Hiv’ also known as le Vel à l’Hiv’ or l’Opération Vent Printanier in which thousands of Jews, oddly enough almost twice as many women as men, and quite a few children, were rounded up in Paris, France sometime perhaps mid-July, 1942, shipped in cattle cars on the railroad to Auschwitz and murdered en masse at the Nazis’ concentration camp there.

The 1924 Summer Olympic Games were hosted au Vélodrome d’Hiver, which was a massive sports arena in Paris, situated near the Eiffel Tower. There were various events scheduled for bicycle enthusiasts, security was extremely tight, and people were tricked into being trafficked to Auschwitz, gassed to death and cremated, instead of being allowed to leave the sports arena when the event was over. Predominantly young people -- on bicycles -- who didn't want their parents to know where they were.
