On May 17, 2025, officers in Fairmont received reports of a white Porsche driving all over the roadway. They found Mary Lou Retton in an AutoZone parking lot with a screw-top wine bottle in the passenger seat and an oxygen tank on her back.

She told the officers she was an Olympic gold medalist and that she could do balance beam. Then she failed all three sobriety tests. She refused the breathalyzer because ‘they say don’t blow.’ She called herself West Virginia’s first daughter.

She pled no contest. She was fined $100.

Damn, talk about a fall from grace.....She's 58 now and had the O2 due to a bout with pneumonia she was recovering from.

Hey, maybe the company that made the screw-top wine can get her to do a commercial. ;)

She was one of the first Olympians to really cash in with advertisers, she might have been the first. I could not stand looking at her picture in 1984, it was everywhere.

Not sure why people love to revel in someone’s fall. She left lasting memories for many. Hope she gets better.

/----/ From another thread:

Dekster

"Olympic gold medalist and West Virginia native Mary Lou Retton is in an Intensive Care Unit and “fighting for her life” as she battles pneumonia.

According to a *spotfund set up by her daughter, McKenna Kelley, Retton has been in the ICU for “over a week now” and has not been able to breathe on her own. Kelley said that out of respect for her mother’s privacy, she would not disclose any more details, but she did say that Retton is uninsured."

It's another athlete rags, to riches, to rags, story, and these are all too common in this country. You have to be careful and manage your money you made while young, and if you drink too much, that don't usually happen.

Hopefully now that she drives a Porshe, she is able to afford health insurance and doesn't have to rely on crowd funding to pay for her medical needs.

No shit....The other gold metal winner from WV that year was a skeet shooter.

Retton got a Corvette from WV, the other gold medalist got squat.

Her commercials made me want to puke coat-hangers.

Ya, when the roar of applause stops many of these athletes have trouble adjusting. When one spent their life being a ghost not much bothers them late in life.

Very sad. 😥

/------/ I agree—and for the record, it's Porsche, not Porshe. And it's pronounced POR-SHAW, not Porschhhh like the guy in the video.
(One of my pet peeves)

Maybe because when you win the hearts of millions of Americans as she did you would think that person would carry herself better as an example to others.

Or maybe she’s just a person with faults and struggles. I don’t know anything about her life post Olympics but prayers to her and her family.

/——/ Fame is fleeting. She flamed out at an early age with nothing to look forward to.

POR-SHUH. The e is pronounced in German according to my college German professor and the company website.

  1. In both German and official brand usage, it is pronounced with two syllables as "Por-shuh", where the final "e" is not silent carzwerk.com+1. This pronunciation reflects the brand's German roots and should be articulated with a soft "sh" sound anusedcar.com.
