Most of the slave labor used was agricultural in nature, or craft industries.

And if you want to talk about countries built on the bodies of the salves, go take a look at most of South America. At least in the US slaves were seen as a commodity to protect and grow, down there they figured they could just replace the ones they worked to death, first the indigenous people they didn't breed with, then Africans.

The difference may be in that we kept at it longer, had a Civil war over it, and since we didn't interbreed nearly as much as the Spanish and Portuguese we had much harder lines set between the former enslaved and the former masters.

We also didn't work them to exhaustion, thus limiting their overall number by the time we ended slavery.
