Message sent to Havana. Time to go.
Before being taken to New York to face criminal charges, captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro was transported on the USS Iwo Jima to the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship, has a fully-functioning ship jail known as a brig, as well as highly-trained sailors and Marines that can guard high-value targets.
A U.S. official said Maduro stayed quiet on the Iwo Jima in handcuffs and wearing black goggles. He asked to go to the toilet twice and was given sandwiches and snacks. Military doctors took his vitals and stood by in case something happened.
