Friday I was in another classroom covering for another teacher during the last period of the day (and week). When the bell rang and the kids rushed out I held back waiting for the enormous crowd to thin out before I headed to my regular classroom to get my gear together. While I was waiting, a student came in to retrieve a jacket he had left in the room earlier in the day. Turns out he was a student who was in my class four years ago as a freshman. I hadn't seen him since then. When he was in my ESL class he was convinced he would become a professional basketball player and didn't need to worry about grades. I lectured him many, many times that he was NOT going to become a pro B-ball player. He argued with me about it all the time. When he came into the classroom I almost didn't recognize him because he had let his hair grow out to a dramatic degree. He was very pleased and proud to tell me that he had recently been accepted by a college and even give an (academic) scholarship. A good kid, very smart, and I was genuinely thrilled for him.

This is what you always want to hear.

From what I've been told............this is what teachers strive for.

John Wooden, a legendary UCLA basketball coach, said, “A good coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life”. Wooden believed that a coach should be a teacher who instills values and moral integrity in their players.

I coached Baseball for 12 years.

No you weren't....You were here shit posting all day.

Time stamps aren't your friend.

Covering for a study hall leaves some free time. Have you ever taught an advanced class?

Fuck them, send your light work to me.

I was forced early on to choose what I truly wanted to do. Coach or Ref Wrestling. I chose Reffing best choice I ever made. 34 years as a Ref, the things I saw the things I witnessed... I wouldn't change a thing.

Tough choice. I have done some refereeing when necessary, and parents can be 'difficult.'

So can a bad one. Change is not always good.
