Made a starter heat shield...

Old starter on the pickup had a heat sunk starting problem... Has had for years... But it started getting worse of late so I replaced the starter. Someone before me threw the heat shield away when they replaced the starter...but I figured the new starter would be ok for a few years.

Nope.

Started getting heat sunk almost immediately.

Couldn't find a great shield at the junk yard or online... So I made one...

I never knew starters were prone to overheat, due to engine heat. Makes sense though. I haven't had one go out in a long time. Back in the day, I did more replacement because the starter bendix went out than the starter motor.
Let us know if it solves your problem on the new starter.

That's the exhaust coming right off the passenger side exhaust manifold... and of course the block and the oil pan are an inch from the other side.

I don't know who to be more frustrated with... The guy who discarded the original heat shield or Ford for this design flaw.

I think this will take care of it. If not I'll shield the exhaust pipe as well.

I've never had a starter heat sink problem.
But that's some good info I'll file away in my memory bank. ....
