The Polish Legions were led by a half black Polish General Wladislaw Jablonowsky, son of an English aristocrat woman and her black servant. Her aristocrat Polish husband Jablonowsky raised him as his own son, gave him an upper class education and enrolled in him in the French military academy where he was a classmate of Napoleon. He volunteered for the Haitian mission, died from disease shortly after arrival.
