It was because leftist Anti Americans wanted to destroy and forget history they disagreed with and wanted done away with,much like Al Qaeda and ISIS did in areas they controlled...destroy monuments and historical documents etc. The leftists wanted to remove and destroy a statue of General Lee..the riots,deaths,violence ALL fall on their heads. Secession was a weapon used by every state and region in the country at one time or another; that's because it was understood from the beginning that the Union was voluntary, which in turn was why Madison and many other Federalists specifically rejected granting the Federal government the power to use violence against a state government at the Constitutional Convention. Lincoln simply wanted to disproportionately tax the South to pay fro big subsidies and corporate welfare for many of the northern states. We know this because he said so, and we also know it was the main reason for the war by the votes his government focused on passing first, and 'slavery' was way way down on the list. We also know his 'plan' was to keep blacks on the plantations and keep them growing cotton, with no rights to leave without written permission from the new 'owners'. We k now this because that's exactly what he did in the 'freed' states.
