A massive boom that rocked downtown Palm Springs on Saturday around 11 a.m. appears to be a car explosion near the American Reproductive Centers clinic on North Indian Canyon Drive at East Tachevah Drive, Palm Springs police said around noon.

Lt. William Hutchinson said that there appears to be at least one fatality.

"Everything is in question, whether this is an act of terrorism," he said on the scene.

The explosion was heard and felt by people in at least a 2-mile radius and at noon, emergency response vehicles were still arriving at the scene.

Palm Springs advised residents to stay away from the area so that emergency crews can work the incident.

The act was being investigated as a possible car explosion, said two law enforcement officials briefed on the matter who insisted on anonymity to discuss preliminary information from an ongoing investigation. At least one person was believed dead, said one of the officials. Authorities have not disclosed a motive.

The city of Palm Springs said Saturday in a social medial post that the explosion happened at 11 a.m. local time and that residents were being asked to avoid the area around North Indian Canyon Drive near East Tachevah Drive.
