A four-part series about a volcanic eruption on the Canary Islands. The action and effects kept me coming back for sure, but the dialogue, character "development" and plot devices were subpar. I'd rate it maybe a B- overall. I would give it a C, but I keep thinking about it. We seem to be very interested in doom and gloom, apocalyptic movies these days.....

Here's a good article I found on the Canary Islands, La Palma in particular. The series has a very definite bend toward "climate change", but as the article states, these kind of events happen every few hundred thousand years.

Read online that most of this show is CGI. Not that it bothers me, but it sure does when the acting is horrendous and storyline sucks. I made it halfway through the first episode. Turned it off because it was just too bad.

I quite enjoyed the show even though I spent a lot of time yelling at the T.V. regarding the continuous series of bad decisions made by the characters.

I almost spoiled part of the movie, but it kept me glued to the T.V.

Unfortunately whenever I hear mention of the "Canary Island" it always brings back memories of the KLM & Pam Am collision on the runway there in Tenerife. I was attending a university & training for a career in aviation at the time. Also, the reason those 747s were even at the Tenerife airport was due to a terrorist bombing at a nearby airport and they were both diverted to Tenerife where they were forced to use the same runway for both take-off & taxing.

The Tenerife Airport Disaster is one of the deadliest aviation accidents in history, occurring on March 27, 1977, at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport) in the Canary Islands. Here’s a summary of the incident:

The Disaster

  • Aircraft Involved:
    1. A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Boeing 747 (Flight 4805).
    2. A Pan Am Boeing 747 (Flight 1736).
  • Passengers and Crew:
    • The KLM aircraft carried 248 passengers and crew.
    • The Pan Am aircraft carried 396 passengers and crew.
  • What Happened:
    1. Both planes had been diverted to Los Rodeos Airport due to a terrorist bomb explosion at their original destination, Gran Canaria Airport.
    2. Los Rodeos Airport was small, with limited parking space, forcing the planes to wait on the taxiway.
    3. Heavy fog reduced visibility, making it difficult for pilots and air traffic controllers to see the planes.
    4. Miscommunications between the KLM crew, Pan Am crew, and air traffic control (ATC) led to a tragic misunderstanding.
      • The KLM plane began its takeoff roll without proper clearance.
      • The Pan Am plane was still taxiing on the same runway, unable to see the KLM plane due to the fog.
    5. The two aircraft collided on the runway.
      • The KLM plane struck the Pan Am plane as it attempted to take off, causing a massive explosion.

Casualties

  • Total Fatalities:583
    • All 248 on the KLM flight died.
    • 335 of the 396 on the Pan Am flight died.
  • Survivors: 61 passengers and crew from the Pan Am flight managed to escape before the fire consumed the aircraft.

Key Factors Leading to the Collision

  1. Miscommunication:
    • The KLM captain misunderstood ATC’s instructions, believing he had clearance for takeoff.
    • ATC’s use of non-standard phrases contributed to confusion.
  2. Fog and Poor Visibility:
    • Dense fog made it impossible for the pilots or ATC to visually confirm the positions of the aircraft.
  3. Crew Decision-Making:
    • The KLM captain, an experienced pilot, took off without explicit confirmation from ATC.
  4. Airport Limitations:
    • Los Rodeos Airport was not equipped with ground radar, which could have helped ATC monitor the planes’ positions.

Aftermath

  • The Tenerife disaster led to major changes in aviation safety, including:
    1. Standardized Communication:
      • Implementation of precise and unambiguous communication protocols in aviation (e.g., "roger," "affirmative," and "negative").
    2. Crew Resource Management (CRM):
      • Training for pilots and crew to improve teamwork, assertiveness, and decision-making.
    3. Runway Design:
      • Improved signage, markings, and lighting on runways and taxiways.
    4. Ground Radar Installation:
      • Airports adopted ground radar systems to monitor aircraft movement on the ground.

Legacy

The Tenerife disaster remains a pivotal moment in aviation history, shaping modern air travel safety protocols. It serves as a somber reminder of how small errors and miscommunications can lead to catastrophic consequences.

Yeah, the action kept me coming back, as I said. But the stories were pretty bad.

For me, nothing on Netflix has touched The Queen's Gambit.

After the first episode I FFed through the "family strife"/underage lesbo scenes as I found them tiresome.

I figured early-on the autistic kid would play an important role.

It was "meh" at best.

Certainly dragged in parts. The entire story could have been told in three episodes at the most.
