In a 12-3 vote on Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council approved a minimum wage hike for airport and hotel workers, with the goal of it reaching $30 an hour by 2028 in time for the Olympics.

According to the Olympic Wage ordinance, the minimum wage for airport and hotel workers is set to go up to $22.50 an hour in July, with it going up by $2.50 every July until July 2028, when it will peak at $30 an hour. In addition, employers will also be required to pay $8.35 for each hour payment to cover health care costs by January 2026. A housekeeping training requirement will go into effect as well, giving at least 6 hours worth of training a year, telling them what to do in an emergence, how to respond to human trafficking, violence, and other serious situations.

Hotel and airport workers in Los Angeles have been trying to get a significant wage increase for years. Previously, many hotel workers fought to get a raise to over $11 an hour in 2023. However, a rapidly increasing cost of living in Los Angeles, compounded by recent rent jumps and Los Angeles hosting several major events in the coming years including the 2026 World Cup, the 2026 NBA All-Star Game, the 2027 Super Bowl and the 2028 Olympics, reinvigored unions, primarily Unite Here, and employees to demand another increase. Many were inspired to do so by AB 1228, which increased the fast food minimum wage to $20 an hour last year.

While the hotel, airport, and tourism industry vigorously opposed the increase, it nonetheless moved forward in the Los Angeles City Council, culminating in a 12-3 vote on Wednesday.

Union officials and some lawmakers praised the move, saying that it would help keep workers in LA and would benefit the local economy.

They are hosting the Summer Olympics in 28. They must think that they can cash in on it. I love to see them lose millions on the games because of the high cost of attending them.

LOL.....$250.00 a night coming to a LA Motel 6 near you.....We will leave the light on for you. ;)

If minimum wage were to be figured by current economic prices and issue (which its supposed to be every year, but hasn't since the 70's)......$30.00 was minimum wage 25 years ago.

Just not true.

Social Security benefits actually do increase annually based on inflation, and haven't rise that much.

You'll be able to stay for less than that. The LA difference will mean $250 is what you'll have to pay for a clean room.

Hotel operators will dispense with amenities like janitorial services to bring the price more in line..

Remember in Los Angeles, hotels have to compete with urban camping which is a huge trend in the City of Angels. Why pay anything considering its usually nice outside in LA and you can pitch a tent on a sidewalk for free?

Perhaps a business opportunity is buying a big chunk of land very near or inside a city and develop it as a campground where people live in tents for a long time forva very low price. Provide running water and bathrooms and watch the $ roll in.

Hotel and airport workers will be very well paid. There will just be fewer of them. Los Angeles found out what happens when they gave fast food workers a raise. The kiosk replaced most of the workers.

Hotels are next.

The more they meddle the more inflation hits us.

Generally I hate motels or hotels. By the time you get the temp right, bed de-covered, learn TV, bathroom, get comfortable, it is late. Next thing it's time to get up. Got to get cleaned up to get coffee and buffet + mad rush to checkout by 11. It blows. Always tired.

My own bed always better.

/----/ Like, homeless people will pay one red cent to that business. You're delusional.

Inflation much? The managers will be moved up to $60-$90.

It can become an out of control frenzy when GOVT meddles into private business. Pretty soon your single Burger costs $9, or $15.

I already make that as a Chief Engineer, they are like way behind on pay.

Hotels say the new wage increase is unaffordable, especially with income for many hotels flat as other costs rise, and could leave some with no option but to convert to homeless housing.

LA passes $30 tourism wage, hotels say they’ll convert to homeless shelters
