The issue with the monarchy today is relevance. I have British roots on one side of my family. The more persecuted side being Scottish but I digress.
King Charles mentioned more than once our Charter of Rights and Freedoms in todays Throne Speech. Perhaps this because he is aware of how many Canadians are dismayed at the expansion of the Police State, perhaps it's because of Canadians openly speaking about "Amendment Rights" which are of course in the U.S Constitution not the Canadian Charter. That is how little we know of it and it is followed by even fewer agencies.
It is also a MAJOR driving force for Canadians who leave for America, I mean this has to be #2 very closely behind #1 which is opportunity. I would bet it's closer to a 50/50 split as to why Canadians leave for America. Freedom and accountable government is everything in a REAL democracy.
Unfortunately the Crown doesn't meddle in Canadian affairs, I know, because I tried to reach out to the Queen (actually I did reach out though I knew the results beforehand) but on their website it says that they do not involve themselves in domestic issues in Canada or other monarch nations.
This is understandable but also frustrating. As one Canadian on twitter said recently, "what purpose does the monarchy serve for Canada today"? It is great to have shared history and some values but if our basic Charter of Rights and Freedoms, newly formed in 1982; is not only disregarded but mocked, who is going to uphold this? Citizens don't have a million dollars to confront the Creepy Ones and the courts don't acknowledge it as they should.
Hence, Canadians are forced to blow the whistle and so many of us do at a major cost to Canadian industries and economic potential. We reach out to Europe, Asia and especially America. Americas global brand is human rights, freedom and civil liberties. Be it Trump or any other president, if you sell this out for a few easy nickels, the long term costs will be many, many trillions more. Reagan knew this better than any one and he ensured America was the sole super power because of human rights and freedom.
