I wish that the story had included what it is that the woman tried to give the guy for being so honest. It only said that he declined whatever her offer was. Whatever it was, to me, the guy deserved every last bit of it.

It was a Cashiers Check from the bank. In other words, it was the same as cash.
Cashiers Checks have different rules for some reason.

The guy could have cashed it, and there wouldn't have been anything she could have done about it.

According to the write up, that check was for a condominium down payment. Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but how much is the actual property if the down payment alone is $424,000?
