This is a wonderful, beautiful, hilarious, and sad movie all at the same time.
While watching this, my daughter and I both thought it must be a Wes Anderson movie. We are big Wes Anderson fans. Apparently, a lot of people thought the same thing, as I looked it up.
The director is actually Taika Waititi, who I have never heard of.
But just imagine cross-pollinating a Wes Anderson movie with Life Is Beautiful, and you will have a taste of what this movie is like.
If you have never seen Life Is Beautiful, do so as soon as you can.
JoJo Rabbit follows the exploits of a handsome boy who has joined the Hitler Youth toward the end of the Second World War. His imaginary playmate is none other than Adolf Hitler himself. Think Calvin and Hobbes.
There is such wonderful dialog and brilliant direction in this movie.
It is doubly enjoyable since the soundtrack includes the German versions of The Beatles I Wanna Hold Your Hand, The Monkees I'm A Believer, and David Bowie's Heroes.
An example of the dialog:
The young boy and his mother come across some Germans who have been hung in the public square. The boy asks, "What did they do?"
The mother answers, "Whatever they could."
