House Republicans drop bid to tie other issues to debt ceiling - CNN.com
House Speaker John Boehner appeared to acknowledge political reality Tuesday, confirming he would hold a vote on raising the federal borrowing limit without other provisions attached.
The vote is set for Tuesday night, according to House Republican leadership sources, and approval of the "clean" debt ceiling plan would avert another Washington political impasse despised by voters.
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said last week the debt ceiling must be raised by February 27 to ensure the full faith and credit of the United States.
On Monday night, House Republicans had signaled they would demand a condition for raising the borrowing limit, according to legislators following a closed-door meeting.
The plan would raise the debt limit until March 2015, which gets Congress beyond the November elections. It also would repeal cuts to military pensions that were part of the recently passed budget.
Boehner sought to put the blame for a clean debt ceiling bill on President Obama, saying the rising federal debt was his fault.
"It's the President driving up the debt and the President wanted to do nothing about the debt that's occurring, will not engage in our long-term spending problem," Boehner said. "And so, let his party give him the debt ceiling increase that he wants
