They're addicted to fear; where do you think all the talk about "safe spaces" and "making others feel safe" talk comes from? It comes across as if they walk around in a perpetual state of fear and instead of confronting their irrational fear they consciously choose to wallow in it.
I suspect this is all a product of being constantly bombarded by all the propaganda the media puts out which is specifically designed to terrify its audience, combined with the perception that being afraid is a form of virtual signaling.
