It isn't just cats. One time I had an appointment with a doctor. They had a cockatoo, huge, in a cage in the living room. The whole time I was there that cockatoo was wailing, "Supper is at 4:30". So damn, I know I am on the clock. So I push through, get the close pretty quick and move on to the next step, get that close too. It is like a lay down and that one two punch only happened twice in twenty damn years. The other time, it was a cat.

So I return a couple of weeks later to deliver. As I come through the door the cockatoo greets me by name. How amazing is that? And then the client spills the beans. They tell me that cockatoo never speaks to anyone, ever. The fact that he spoke to me initiated instant trust.

I never have worked at it. I really don't understand where it comes from. I am certainly not Dr. Doolittle. It just comes. My wife told me she had never petted a cow. No problem. I pull over on the side of the road and approach a pasture. I stand at the fence and here the cows come. I pet them, she pets them, and then we leave. She asked me, how do you do that. Honestly, I don't know. People, not so good at. Animals, they love me. I will take that. Seems I got the best end of the bargain.

You'd hate living in the Bush in Oz; we shoot feral cats and even barn cats if they get to be too many. They are a disaster for wildlife here.
