The Israeli parliament has given preliminary approval to a controversial bill that would legalise thousands of homes built in the occupied West Bank.

The bill's main backer, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, called it the start of Israel's annexation of most of the territory, which is disputed between Israelis and Palestinians.

Critics of Israel and Palestinians have called it a land grab.
A clause mentioning Amona by name has since been deleted, meaning that this area will not be legalised. It is due to be evacuated on 25 December.

So the fact I posted that they have a legal right to the land under international law was not read by you. How can they take and hold illegally when it already belongs to them. It was the arab league that tried to invade and take control of the land after the lands legal owners granted it to the Jews for their national home

Israel is a scofflaw rogue state which has no regard for international law. Although all the settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem are illegal, the Israelis have lived with this for decades. For them, what other countries think has been disregarded. The moral of this is that the Israelis can virtually annex all of the West Bank and while international diplomats might find this disturbing, they will do nothing. It is actions which count for the Israelis so without any international sanctions against Israel the opportunity for a two-state solution has passed. The Israelis never wanted a Palestinian state as a neighbor and they are sure that it will never happen now.

In essence, this new bill will retroactively legalize the occupation of private Palestinian land in the West Bank by settlements declared illegal even by Israeli law. This is a de facto annexation of land all over the West Bank in similar fashion as the annexation of East Jerusalem. The original sponsor of the bill, Naftali Bennett of the Jewish Home party, described the proposed law as shifting from a path toward a Palestinian state toward one of extending Israeli territory. What is to become of the Palestinians now, one must ask.
