Back to history-----way back in the time of the real Jesus----there were whole
communities of persons living ---way out in the negev----ON THE PRODUCE
OF THAT LAND ---including its water. If you read the bible you know about
ELIJAH-----he lived way out in the negev in a large named community---that was
kinda "monastic" -----In fact---JOHN THE BAPTIST is compared to Elijah----he lived
in the same manner. The ESSENES a community that some assciated with the
real jesus------were also a monastic group way out there. They were not supported
by coins dropped in church plates------they engaged in a bit of agriculture---using
the THEN available natural resources Is that not interesting?

getting back to NOW -----so far no one had demonstrated that depleted uranium
creates environmental problems and my considered opinion is that
remote agent orange exposure does not lead to IMPOTENCE

I did not mention "arab sheepherders" with reference to the SAHARA DESERT----I mentioned them in reference to the NEGEV desert. EROSION OF SOIL in the negev--
AND for that matter in the Sahara was largely a result of loss of FLORA ------In the negev---
largely because of BEDOUIN sheepherders-----migrants from arabia A mere 2000 years
ago----cities in the negev were self sustaining on CULTIVATED produce----not easily--
but ENOUGH The very famous----ISAIAH -----came from a self sustaining town
in the negev. I believe ----JOHN THE BAPTIST came from the same town----or at
least lived there. It was a kind of MONASTIC place-----for mystics. Is that not

NO: Sunni is correct about the Sahara - but NOT about the ME lands. And I regret to say, but I think Rosie is incorrect about it being sheep: it's sheep that clip your lawn, and GOATS that will go down and eat the roots. That's why there are now 'rent-a-herd' of goats to clear lands of weeds and brush: the goats will eat ANY vegetation and will pull up the roots if you give them enough time.

Interestingly enough, archaeologists haven't really been able to tell the difference between the remains of sheep and goats without further testing: but if you look at the most marginal 'pasturage', that's where they place the goats.

I don't fault Rosie for her confusion over this detail - she's a human medical person, not a vet : ))
