Israel in settlements row with Romania

JERUSALEM (AFP) --" A diplomatic spat has erupted between Israel and Romania after Bucharest reportedly refused to allow Romanian construction workers to be employed in West Bank settlements, Israel's military radio said Tuesday."

According to the article, the row comes in the wake of tensions between Israel and the European Union over new guidelines that bar EU funding for any Israeli entity operating in the occupied Palestinian territories.

"Talks with Bucharest on importing Romanian manual labor broke down in 2012, the radio said, but resumed at Israel's initiative after a new Romanian government came to power in May of that year. Differences center on Bucharest's request that Israel guarantee no Romanian construction workers would be employed on the settlements, which are considered illegal under international law."

These diplomatic spats are resulting from the European Union guidelines, which go into effect in January, 2014 and which ban funding for and financial dealing with projects linked to settlements in the West Bank and annexed East Jerusalem.

We all need to remember, as this article points out, all Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.

Just since peace negotiations began in July, "Israel has announced thousands of settler homes."

"The Romanian foreign ministry confirmed to AFP that the talks were continuing and said Bucharest's position would be consistent with "respect for international law, the positions of the EU and the protection of Romanian citizens."It said the latest draft of the accord had been sent to Israel in August for possible revisions, adding that "the negotiations are nearing the end.""

This was Israel's second diplomatic row with an EU country this week, following a dispute with the Netherlands over a new security scanner to be installed on the Israel-Gaza border .

We can certainly expect many more such disputes between Israel and EU nations as January 1, 2014 quickly approaches and the EU Guidelines effective date draws near.

It will never again just be buisness as usual between Israel and EU nations after January 1.

Many unemployed Mexican and other Hispanic workers who previously worked in the construction industry here might be very happy to take the place of the Romanians. Maybe they will think this is better than standing outside Home Depot for a contractor to pick them up. El Al can fly them to Israel and back home again for holidays and vacations. Say, maybe Cinco de Mayo will become a big hit in the territories. Olé.
