Crimea was always Russian. Just because khrushchev decided one freaking day to give it to the Ukraine did not change the basic fact that Crimeans were ethnic Russians.

The Ukraine is fundamentally different than places like the Baltics where many Russians moved under the Soviet Union. The people of Crimea kind of got screwed because they were Russians who lived in Russia. Khrushchev transferred it to the Ukraine believing the Soviet Union would never break up. Then they did.

I'm not defending the Soviet Union for taking it. But the issue is not just that they "speak Russian" as you presented it, so I'm letting you know a little history
