When I was a boy Aunt Jemima’s pancake mix was a standard in anyone’s kitchen. I felt no negative connotations and I never developed any racist feelings. I don’t know, maybe the adults did but no such thoughts developed in my head. Much later the brand Aunt Jemima was considered racist. But isn’t racism something that is fostered inside your own personal thoughts? The same with the words “Negro” and “black”. I know what the words mean. The countries of Nigeria and Niger are no slander and the Rio Negro tributary to the Amazon River isn’t an insult to black people. So why should the product Aunt Jemima be any different?
I wonder what the thought police would say if someone were to introduce a new product called “Sister Shaniqua’s Black Eyed Peas"? Would it be banned? Would there rioting in the streets of major cities?
