Is Bob Dylan the Greatest American, Artistic Genius of the 20th Century ?

The clear sign of cluelessness regarding Bob Dylan.
Actually quite a few people think his voice fits the songs he sings quite well (see the videos in this thread). I'd agree with that.
Sucky singing is still sucky singing

Obviously his mastery of poetry with rhyme, is his top talent, but I wouldn't diminish his musical skills. They masterfully compliment his great lyrics.
A story you’d appreciate…
My sister worked at the Kennedy Center for many, many years. One night, at a celebrity gala event there that she attended with her husband, she directed her husband to an employees-only elevator after the program ended to allow him to leave and avoid the crowd. When he got on the elevator, he had Walter Cronkite on one side and Bob Dylan on the other.
Walter asked Bob why he wasn’t staying for the reception. Bob said he had to fly to Chicago because he had a gig.

The movie “A Complete Unknown” was well done. Timothee Chalameeeey was really very good in the role.

But I still say that Monica Barbaro stole the show.

My son is 28 and has always had some cutting edge views and tastes. He somehow is amongst those in his generation who “found” Bob Dylan and he grasped the profound nature of many of Dylan’s lyrics.

I have to say, his appreciation of Dylan gave me a little impetus to consider some of Dylan’s work more objectively. And I think my son is on to something.

Dylan is and was a genius. This doesn’t mean I agree with all of Dylan’s politics. It just means that I consider Bob Dylan a true artist.

A sarcastic comment by a person that is clueless.
Bob Dylan said that same "sarcastic" (if you must call it that) comment to Neil Diamond himself right to his face, after Diamond said something sarcastic to him.

Now you wont be so "clueless" on this. 😐

Dylan has been recording & doing live concerts for 63 years. He moved on & away from politics after the first 3 years. And even in the first 3 years, his social justice songs tend to be agreed with by folks whether on the left or right.

That’s incorrect. Many of his later songs were also expressions of political belief.

And my point isn’t about his politics as much as it’s about his talent. He truly was prolific and brilliant.

Hey, I hear the John Lennon song, “Imagine” and I disagree with Lennon all the more. But, it was still a nice tune.

I rate Paul Williams almost equally with Bob Dylan
Williams co-wrote 2 of the Carpenters top hits “We’ve Only Just Begun” and "Rainy Days & Mondays", and huge credit for those. Te also wrote Three Dog Night’s Top 10 hit, “Out in the Country.” Williams was a fine songwriter with poetry, and has a long list of accomplishments. This is not to minimize him, in any way but Bob Dylan's list is significantly longer, and generally more artistic over many songs.

I'm less familiar with Dylan's more recent songs than those from the 60s & 70s. What later songs were political?

Williams was a Jack of all trades gunslinger , Dylan managed units ( Groups) and directions for them
