These are native to the Philippines ... and crossed over to the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal and have worked their way up to the US shores ... this is EXTREMELY serious problem ... My first guess would be they're jamming up the propellers and getting sucked into jet intakes.

My dog and I got stung by a jellyfish back in the 80's... ironically - in South Carolina. ( Hilton Head Island)

The tentacles barely nicked me on the arm but it was still extremely painful.
