Because other than that there is no need to set an ambiguous time in history as to when who owned what, when and where, unless they could hang on to it through either physical means or established, defended and accepted legal means, which a bunch of folks obviously couldn't.

Like when we "bought" the Louisiana Purchase from the French, it wasn't really because they "owned" it.
They simply "claimed" it and we decided to trade their "claim" for our treasure, instead of spending the treasure and blood it would have cost to kick their ass and take it.
