All those democrats who bitched at Manchin and Sinema back in 2021 for refusing to end the filibuster should be thanking their lucky stars today that it didn't happen. Imagine what Trump could do if he only needed 51 votes in the Senate rather than 60 to do whatever he wants. Looks like he's going to have a House majority too. I wouldn't doubt that some in the GOP will be clamoring for abolishing the filibuster now that they are in control, but I sincerely hope it doesn't happen.

Wrong. Abolishing the filibuster only hurts conservative, religious, and pro corporate causes.

None of which are popular with the majority of Americans, including abortion rights, gun laws, and SCOTUS decisions such as Citizens United to name just a few.

If the filibuster was a abolished. The first thing Republicans would do when they control the Senate, is to just further drive a wedge between Americans, by trying to strengthen those laws.

Eventually, Democrats would win back control of the Senate repealing all of them, with popular support of the people. Republicans campaigning on overturning those repeals would fail to be elected because they would not be popular with the majority of voters.

Over time, conservative issue, after conservative issue would die on the vine because of the simple unpopular position it would go against the will of the people.

Lets be real clear, and unambiguous about why the filibuster exists. It exists because that is the only way Republicans, and conservatives can shove down the throats of the people, unpopular laws that the majority does not want or agree with. The simple fact is the filibuster would have never existed, if conservative policy was popular as they are deluded enough to think it is.

If any conservative on this board wants to challenge me on that premise as being wrong. It's very simple to do.

You abolish the filibuster, and lets see if your conservative view on those and other issues, are popular with the people or not.

Well than why don't you tell me why the democrats tried to abolish the filibuster back in 2021, and would have but for Sinema and Manchin wouldn't go along. I doubt the progressive liberal policies of the democrats is all that popular either, judging by the most recent election.

You did not read what he said.

Republicans would never abolish the filibuster of their own volition. The second they lose the Senate with a Democratic President. That's the end of 100 years of conservatism, and they know it.

What the OP should have said, was Republicans suspending the filibuster, to achieve what he rightly fears would happen, and on that point, I'm in full agreement with him. No offense was intended whatsoever in my reply to the OP. To the contrary...

I share the same fear, because Republicans are slick.

They would justify all of those actions through suspension, rather than abolishment of the filibuster, in order to keep it intact, to prevent reversal by Democrats in the future. They have done this before.

Republicans would howl like monkeys, if Democrats suspended the filibuster to reverse any actions they put in place, by lying that Democrats were in fact abolishing it, to take away the votes in low populated red states, which they have always done. Wyoming voters have 70 times the power of California voters because of the filibuster. You OK with that?

It is the reason why Democrats must, and should abolish the Filibuster the first chance they get, because as I stated in my reply. They cannot win a tit for tat in passing, or reversing laws unpopular with the majority of people.

Republicans are going to get these unpopular laws passed anyway, slowly but surely, over time, while we have no way to reverse them, by relying on court decisions. Democrats are going to have to eventually suck it up, and allow Republicans to push through without filibuster resistance, the laws we don't agree with, because they hurt the people,

While we are going to have to put up with some suffering, which we are already doing anyway. By abolishing the filibuster, it gives us the opportunity the second we get power back, to push through by brute force, repeal after repeal to revers 100 years of conservatism in one Presidential term. Pack the federal judiciary, by appointing 100 more justices to Scotus if necessary, and 100 new district, circuit, and appeals court judges in every district in the country, and immediately bring cases to all of those courts to either reverse, or confirm all of our efforts.

The next time Republicans won power back. While they would be successful at reversing some of those efforts. They wouldn't be successful at reversing all of them. Our position grows stronger, as theirs grow weaker, and it's rinse, and repeat the next time we win back the power.

Over time. The unpopular conservative positions that were forced through all of those years of the filibuster are gone. Permanently. There is no other way that's ever going to happen, and it's where Democrats have failed us over that time.

Because Democrats are weak, and do not have the vision to play the long game like Republicans have for the last 100 years.

It wasn't going to happen. Libs love the filibuster.

The filibuster gives Democrats an "out" to explain to their voters why they didn't pass what they said they would during the campaign.

"We couldn't get past the Republican filibuster, sorry, you'll have to reelect us and we'll try again next session"

If the libs actually passed their foolishness, the libs would have to answer for the program's failure. Further, the libs would have to find something else to scare their base with.

But the causes pushed by the left are extremely popular and that's why Harris won in a landslide. Oh, wait.

The majority of Americans, which includes Republicans, are against abortion laws, are for gun laws, and are against scotus decisions like Citizens United, and making the President above the law.

Grow up son. As hard as that might be for you.

The majority of Americans, including Republicans, just proved you wrong.

Collins and her shadow won't be able to hold the Senate hostage, and God willing, those Freedom Caucus people won't be able to hold the House hostage. Beyond that, I really don't see much going on other than politics as usual. Trump won't have 60 in the Senate so he can't run the car too far off the road. Maybe onto the shoulder a time or two, but certainly not into the ditch.
