Honest question, why do you think liberals have such an issue with differentiating between ILLEGAL immigration and LEGAL immigration?

If the uncle is supporting immigration policy from 100 years ago which resulted in immigrants assimilating to the freedoms of their new country, working hard to develop and protect those freedoms, I can agree with him.
If he's supporting immigrants coming and working hard receiving no government funded welfare, I can agree with him.

It would be helpful if liberals want to use immigration of the past as an example if they clarified the policies of the past and how those policies produced a generation that valued the freedoms of the US.
