That's what I always worried about, my weapon of choice was a twelve-gauge loaded with birdshot. Enough to damage or kill an intruder but not heavy enough to penetrate two layers of drywall.

Most apartment walls have at least two layers of drywall. Sometimes three for soundproofing.

The birdshot penetrated far better than I thought it would. But it's the least bad choice for home defense. A .223 round would have penetrated all four walls and not even slow3ed down as I believe a 9mm round would as well.
