This is amazing stuff. That we can communicate with dogs is a huge step forward.
I do hope that the scientists are working on a similar device so that we can start speaking to maga. That would be a huge breakthru.

Nothing new. We have had buttons our dog has long used. When she is out of food there is one near her bowl that says "food" that she uses. There is a "walk" button that she uses way too often. When she has to go out there is an "outside" button pushes.

She knows probably 30 other words. If I say "want some cheese"? She runs to the fridge.

Thats a better world. Communication is important.

There is a series on You Tube of Todd the cat who uses a soundboard to communicate with his "Dad". The article is in error, dogs and cats don't need a soundboard for us to communicate with them. They already understand every thing you say. It's the stupid humans who need the sound board to understand what their animals are saying.

I remain skeptical.

You could write "neuter me" on the food button, and the dog will press it to get food.

Dogs can sequence up to 3 or four events. My dog can string three tricks together with a single command.

This all just looks like classical conditioning, to me.
