Last November President Barack Obama said he would extend the 15-year-old economic sanctions against Sudan, explaining that the actions of the Sudanese government that initially led to the measures still threatens U.S. security.
In a letter sent to leaders in both houses of Congress, Obama said the U.S. government will continue to enforce sanctions first put in place during the Clinton administration, after the Sudanese government took actions that led the former president to declare a national emergency.
The White House is making a mistake by renewing the completely inexcusable unilateral sanctions imposed against Sudan since 1993.
We believe that the Obama administration is mistaken when it renews the economic sanctions thinking that it will punish the government and forgetting that those who pay the price for those sanctions are Sudanese citizens.
The continued airplane crashes which claim the lives of thousands are a consequence of the economic sanctions.
There is a big difference between the Obama administration dominated by the Zionist lobby and the ordinary American citizen, who built a giant civilisation based on democracy and human rights.
However, the Obama administration should correct this egregious policy responsible for economic injustice against the innocent citizens of Sudan.
In yesterday’s issue we published an Op-Ed on human rights by the U.S. Charge D’ Affaires in Khartoum, Ambassador Joseph Stafford, which reads:
International Human Rights Day, which we celebrate each December 10, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. In adopting the UDHR, the United States and governments around the world recognized that human beings, by virtue of their birth, are endowed with certain inalienable rights, and that these serve as ‘the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.’ We look to the Universal Declaration both as a reminder of values and as a guide for action.”
According to the release published by the Obama administration, they will continue the hard work of making human rights a reality for every person, no matter who they are or where they live.
Let us hope that the Obama administration translates those words into actions and lifts the unjustifiable sanctions against the Sudanese people.
