It all depends on your perception and what you look at.
A humble parish priest who hardly steps out of his domain could have more knowledge of the world around him, simply because he is interested.
Sure. But there is different type of knowledge and there are different ways of getting it.
And a traveler won't necessarily be knowledgeable, however those travelers I met who I'd call "hard-core travelers" will almost always be knowledgeable.
I went from traveling southern Africa, using combis, walking a lot etc to being in Thailand, the difference was huge. The people in Thailand are there to party, to wear bright clothes, in southern Africa the travelers try and fit in, they're there to experience things. It's too dangerous to go to party.
So, you're not wrong. It's a generalization. However "traveling" in the terms of going to lots of places, learning about those places, seeing the differences, rather than partying, will almost always broaden the mind.
And many people who go nowhere, will not have a broad mind, but some will.
