Instead of "layering" green and brown materials in your compost pile, mixing them together uniformly by hand, then you won't have hot spots and cold spots. Also be sure and use a compost thermometer, to be sure your pile doesn't overheat.
 
I just throw stuff in the bins/piles as it comes along. It'll all break down eventually. I am not that worried about how fast.

Actually, the slower the better. I have projects lined up for my compost, so I want it finished by a certain time.
 
I throw all the shit in a big ass pile.
 
Wife and I have a friendly haggle over composting - should one put meat scraps in.
She says it will attract rats and vermin.
I say, "We live in the country(rural) and already have rats and vermin out there. It's not like word is going to travel a couple miles to draw more here."

Our compromise - I dig a hole a foot or two down in the compost pile and bury the meat scraps there. Should make the worms and bugs happy.

Use dead democrats in your compost.

They are 99.99% manure
