The timing could have hardly been worse. Maybe if it were a few days earlier, that would have been even worse for the Dems, but the timing is pretty bad.
Not because of the incident itself so much. Maybe Paul Pelosi is gay. Maybe his being gay while publicly pretending to be happily married to a woman leads him to associate with a lot of alternate types. Whoop-de-do. No one left or right should be surprised by that, and it's really nobody's business. There's no hypocricy in that, Nancy Pelosi is a strong supporter of gay rights and alternate lifestyles.
It is the automatically knee jerk reaction of Dems to blame Trump that will bring out the Republican vote, even from never-Trump Republicans:
A far right white nationalist tried to assassinate the Speaker of the House and almost killed her husband a year after violent insurrectionists tried to find her and kill her in the Capitol.
- Ilhan Omar
That will get out the vote for GOP candidates. Establishment-type Republicans who might have stayed home thinking "the Damn Dems helped a Trump supporter win the primary in my district. I'd have voted if my guy was on the ballot," now have to know that a Dem victory means two more years of Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Maybe if Pelosi were to resign as Speaker today, the election could be salvaged, or at least the red wave not such a disaster. Of course she will not. The Red Wave just went tidal, and there is little time for Dems to prepare for it.
