If a person is truly demented and/or mentally ill causing them to truly believe something like "the Death Jab" or "Trump won 2020", are they really lying?

Lying is a choice, mental illness is not. A person who is demented has a limited ability to help themselves. It's only through conversation does it become clear how far down they've gone.

Lots of MAGATs here claim to be Christians, but never walk the walk. Some, I know, are just lying, but there are more than a few who appear to have strong cognitive issues. Mostly commonly elderly related. Some confess their age, others try to hide it, but are clues.

I'm no spring chicken myself, but I strongly believe God gave us the ability to make choices. Animals react to their genes or experience. Mankind is the foremost species on the planet to both invent and excel at a game like chess. The smarter and/or more experienced a person, the further they can see ahead in the moves. Some people can't see very far ahead.* Some even believe they were cheated when they lose even though the entire game is recorded.

If they are not mentally capable of free choice, can they really be choosing to lie? I think not.

Notice how the people in this category are the ones who love to scream their beliefs, sling names, false accusations and, generally, try to bullshit their way through a conversation like they've done most of their adult lives? Sadly, I think these people are mentally deficient to the point of harming themselves or others.....usually themselves, but the psychological abuse they spread around should not be discounted.

Like any problem, the first step is recognizing there is a problem. Second is what to do about it?

People don't "just snap". There are warning signs which can be screened for. I'm not talking "Minority Report" here, but simply screening for mental aberrations like we screen for various cancers and other diseases. It's not a one-time type test, but an annual or semi-annual assessment to look for trends. It can be done on a computer in about 30 minutes to establish a baseline.

It's easier to treat a minor cut early than cure blood poisoning. Clean it, point some ointment on it, slap a band-aid on it and get back to work.
